David Copperfield: The Passionate Illusionist

A seemingly normal and ordinary man appears before the audience. Even as he enters the audience realizes that he is a dream-weaver who holds them under his spell. This is none other than David Copperfield, who is famous for his excellence in the field of illusion and magic of all sorts.

Starting to perform at the tender age of 12, he progressed onto becoming the youngest person to be admitted to the Society of American Magicians. By the time he turned 16, he was teaching a course in magic at the New York University and at 18 entered Fordham University. Three weeks later he was chosen for the lead role of the Chicago based musical, The Magic Man, performing all the magic tricks by himself. Thus he started his career under the name of David Copperfield.

He was born as David Seth Kotkin in 1956 to Jewish parents in Metuchen, New Jersey. Since his childhood he has been a keen student and a practitioner of the art of magic and illusion. His artistry and imagination as well as his extraordinary theatrical abilities are evident in all his work. Most notable out of his work are the instances where he walked through the Great China Wall, made the famous Statue of Liberty disappear and demonstrated flying and levitated over the Grand Canyon. He is a magician par excellence and has many television shows, world tours, books and awards to his credit.
David Copperfield played the character of the magician called Ken in the film Terror Train in 1980. He also brought out two books named David Copperfield’s Tales of the Impossible and David Copperfield’s Beyond Imagination which were written together with Dean Koontz, Joyce Carol Oats and Ray Bradbury.

David Copperfield may be the most successful magician in terms of earnings. He is currently the thirteenth highest paid entertainer and has been featured on the cover of Forbes Magazine. He has taken the art of magic and illusion to great heights and has a charming presence on stage. His abilities have been recognized by many countries. The French government awarded the ‘Chevalier of Arts and Letters and at least four other countries have stamps and his likeness on their legal tender. He has been awarded an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters by Fordham University and in 2000 he was named a Living Legend by the United States Library of Congress. Madame Toussaud’s in London displays his wax likeness and he also has been awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In his own words, his greatest achievement to this day is the project founded by him to rehabilitate disabled patients and set them on the path to regaining lost or damaged dexterity skills through the sleight-of-hand magic. Project Magic as it is called is used in over 1100 hospitals and has been accredited by the American Occupational Therapy Association.

Mystical, enigmatic, witty and highly entertaining Copperfield is passionate about this ancient art form and has always tried to preserve it whenever possible. He has the largest collection of magic and conjuring artifacts, historic memorabilia that is seen in one place. It is known as the International Museum and Library of Conjuring Arts and houses impressive collections all adding up to 80,000 items and 15,000 books on the subject dating from centuries ago to the present day.

David Copperfield performs to sold-out venues about 500 times each year. He is a true performer who is passionate about all forms of magic and the ancient art of conjuring and touches our lives with mystery. Hopefully, he will be able to delight and enrapture us for a long time to come.
